Lesson Twenty-Four
Possession of Animate Things

In Arapaho, animate things which are possessed often take special endings on the noun. A good example is the word he3, 'dog':

neté3ebiib my dog
heté3ebiib your dog
hité3ebiiw his/her dog

Note that h-, when preceded by a possession prefix, always changes to t- in Arapaho. Note also that -ebiib is added to he3 in the possessed form. Also note that "his or her dog" is placed in the obviative. That is why the -b changes to -w.

These forms can be made plural, as with all Arapaho possessed forms:

neté3ebiiwo' my dogs
heté3ebiiwo' your dogs
hité3ebiiwo his/her dogs

And with plural possessors, we get the following:

neté3ebiibínoo our(excl) dog or dogs
heté3ebííbin our(incl) dog or dogs
heté3ebiibínoo your(pl) dog or dogs
heté3ebiibínoo our dog or dogs
