Lesson Twenty-FourPossession of Animate Things
In Arapaho, animate things which are possessed often take special endings on the noun. A good example is the word he3, 'dog':
neté3ebiib | my dog |
heté3ebiib | your dog |
hité3ebiiw | his/her dog |
Note that h-, when preceded by a possession prefix, always changes to t- in Arapaho. Note also that -ebiib is added to he3 in the possessed form. Also note that "his or her dog" is placed in the obviative. That is why the -b changes to -w.
These forms can be made plural, as with all Arapaho possessed forms:
neté3ebiiwo' | my dogs |
heté3ebiiwo' | your dogs |
hité3ebiiwo | his/her dogs |
And with plural possessors, we get the following:
neté3ebiibínoo | our(excl) dog or dogs |
heté3ebííbin | our(incl) dog or dogs |
heté3ebiibínoo | your(pl) dog or dogs |
heté3ebiibínoo | our dog or dogs |
