Sunflowers and the Arapaho

Arapahos today cannot remember the old name for this plant, though they remember that there was such a name. They say that the name had something to do with 'it is watching you' or something similar. Some elders report that the plant was vaguely spooky to young children for this reason, while others report conversely that the plant was watching out for them. The roots of Helianthus tuberosus were eaten by a number of plains tribes.
