Drug: respiratory aid. The plant is reported by the Arapaho to be used as a medicine to produce sneezing. They say that the sneezing clears up congestion. Murphey reports that “the blossoms are crushed and inhaled as a remedy for hay fever.”

Drug: analgesic. Arapahos say that the plant is used to produce sneezing which relieves pressure on the head. Murphey confirms the identity of this plant (as Helenium hoopesii), and reports that blossoms of the plant were mixed with leaves of Psoralidium lanceolata (Psoralea lanceolata) to create a compound used as an inhalant against headaches.
