Statistical Syntactic Parsing
Instructor(s): Rebecca Hwa
Description:
This course presents a survey of recent advances in statistical parsing. We begin with an introduction of basic probabilistic models of syntax, parsing algorithms, and evaluation metrics. We then examine the interactions between machine learning and parsing. We will discuss the impact of treebanks (both in terms of the design of annotation schemes as well as the data collected) on the development of parsing models. Our discussions will be framed in the context of both generative and discriminative parsing models. Finally, we consider ways in which statistical parsing has contributed to other areas of computational linguistics (e.g., machine translation).
Prerequisites:
Familiarity with basic probability and statistics; Some experiences with analyzing algorithms
