NOTE: The object of surprise is usually evident in the sentence.

Examples:
I'm surprised that nobody's thought of this before.
It doesn't really surprise me that nobody accepted the offer.

NOTE: Unlike sense 1, the circumstances of the 'surprise' are not improbable. For example, in the case of 'robbers were surprised by the police', police catching robbers is not an unexpected event.
