Eve Sweetser

Eve Sweetser is Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley; she also teaches in the Cognitive Science and Celtic Studies Programs. She received her BA in 1976 from Harvard and her PhD in 1984 from UC Berkeley. She has taught at Berkeley ever since. She has also taught at the 1995, 2001 and 2009 LSA Institutes. Her interests include Construction Grammar, grammatical meaning, mental spaces, metaphor, conditional constructions, viewpoint, co-speech gesture, verbal art and Welsh and Breton linguistics. Published books include: From Etymology to Pragmatics (1990, CUP); Barbara Dancygier and Eve Sweetser, Mental Spaces in Grammar: Conditional Constructions (2005, CUP). Her edited volumes include: Spaces, Worlds and Grammar (co-edited with Gilles Fauconnier, 1996, Chicago); Causal Categories in Discourse and Cognition (co-edited with Ted Sanders, 2009, Mouton).
