Makoto Hayashi

Makoto Hayashi holds a PhD in Linguistics from University of Colorado at Boulder and has taught in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign since 2000. His research employs the methodology of Conversation Analysis to explore ways in which language practices used by Japanese speakers shape, and are shaped by, the organization of talk-in-interaction. He is the author of Joint Utterance Construction in Japanese Conversation (John Benjamins, 2003) and is a co-editor of Conversational Repair and Human Understanding (CUP, forthcoming). He has also published numerous journal articles exploring the intersection of grammar and social interaction.
