Ticks and the Arapaho

A well-known Arapaho story tells how the tick had a race with the fox, and beat him. This story is similar to “The Tortoise and the Hare” of European tradition. The tick jumps on the fox's tail, and as the fox runs, crawls up his tail, back, and head. Just as the fox reaches the finish line, the tick crawls onto his nose, literally "beating him by a nose."
