Shorebirds and the Arapaho

The above name was given by Lloyd Dewey for ‘curlew’ and by Edward Willow for ‘slough bird’ (i.e. ‘rail’). It closely resembles the word for Mountain Plover as well, which is given in F. V. Hayden's 1863 report. It is probably used generally for any bird with long, thin legs. See also heron, egret, etc.
