The name for this bird is also the word used by the Arapaho for frost and cold mist, commonly translated into English as ‘Jack Frost.’
There is also a mythical figure known as White Owl, who is the eternal adversary of the Thunderbird. White Owl represents night, winter, snow and cold, while Thunderbird represents day, summer, rain, and heat. The Mummy Range in northern Colorado was called ‘White Owls’ (nookubee3eino’) by the Arapahos.
