the species in the traditional Arapaho area is the Short-horned Lizard (Phynosoma douglassi).

 

Horned Lizards and the Arapaho

This is the same word as is used for ‘donkey’ or ‘mule’.

The Horned Toad was regarded as a favorable animal, and therefore not killed (Kroeber, The Arapaho, p. 56). It was widely used for navel amulets.
