Grouse and the Arapaho

Edward Curtis gives another, unknown name for grouse: <che’-ta-i-che’-na>. The last part of the word is -cenee, but the first part is unclear, though it may be cihi'teh'ei- meaning literally 'little belly' but actually used to mean 'big belly,' as with children.

Sage Grouse were used in early reservation days as an important food source, and are still widely hunted today.
