Fish and the Arapaho

Fish were used in designs of navel-cord amulets according to Alfred Kroeber (The Arapaho, p. 58). This is somewhat surprising in that fish otherwise play little role in Arapaho ritual, ceremony or mythology, although the Thunderbird uses the rainbow to fish for the Water Monster (hiincebiit).

In early reservation days, fish were heavily relied on as a food source. More recently, water pollution has diminished this resource.
