Elk and the Arapaho

Elk were a major food source, second only to the buffalo. Elk meat was treated in the same ways as that of the Buffalo - jerked, dried, pounded and so forth.

Elk antlers were preferred for hide scrapers in former times

A number of locations in Colorado were named in relation to the elk (see Places).

Elk spinal vertebrae were used to make carved jewelry, according to Nelson White. Eyes, nose and mouth were carved into a vertebra, and then it was worn as a necklace.
