bat
‘brown/ugly/old/worn out winged one’
Several species of bats occupy the Northern Arapaho area.
Bats were ambiguous for the Arapaho, as it was unclear whether they were birds or animals (mammals). An old story tells of a contest between the birds and the animals, in which the bat intervened on the side of the animals, flying up to seize the hair-ball which was the object of the contest, and stealing it from the birds. This is why the bat is a mammal.
