HelpThe dictionary consists of two main sections: Navajo-English (the Navajo Search tab) and English-Navajo (the English search tab).
Basic searchThe checkboxes "word" and "definition" can be used to control whether or not to search in the headwords, or the definition/example sentences, or both. In the results tab, the ± icon toggles the definition display. Also, links to possible verb paradigm lists are displayed inside the definitions. Clicking [View paradigm] will display the paradigm for the verb. In case Y&M does not specify a paradigm for the verb, clicking [Guess paradigm] will attempt to find and display one that matches the prefix information given in that entry.All searches are case insensitive. All other search modifications are conjunctive; for instance, entering a search term and checking a classifier box will find only those entries where both the term and the classifier match.
TransliterationBy checking the box "Transliterate," searches can be eased so that the following patterns are also matched.
For instance, entering adishniih as the search string, and checking "transliterate" will find both adishniih and adishnííh. Note, however, that when using the "transliterate" feature, matches in the definitions will not be displayed in boldface. Y&M dictionary in a flexible way. Y&M contains some 15,000 entries in the Navajo section, and over 8,000 in the English-Navajo section. Apart from dictionary and grammatical information, the translated examples and definitions in Y&M provide a searchable 700,000 word corpus of the language.
